The product

Diamond Candles makes natural soy candles with a ring hidden inside every one — the “ring reveal.” Most rings are costume jewelry; a small number in every batch are worth up to $5,000. The mechanic turned an everyday home fragrance purchase into a shareable moment: customers filmed their reveals, posted them, and became the brand’s primary acquisition channel.

The growth story

The company hit $1M in revenue in its first year and was approaching a $20M annual run rate by year three — without outside capital and without meaningful paid advertising in the early years. Growth compounded through the product-embedded viral loop, an organic Facebook community that passed one million fans, and disciplined retention economics. Justin has told the story in detail on Mixergy and the eCommerceFuel podcast, and wrote up the playbook in 7 Shortcuts for Building an E-Commerce Startup to $1M in 12 Months and How My E-Commerce Startup Reached 1,000,000 Facebook Fans Without Spending a Dime on Paid Ads.

Recognition

Diamond Candles was named to the Internet Retailer Hot 100 (2013) as one of the 100 ecommerce companies breaking new ground in digital retail, and won the Kalypso Spike Award in the CPG category (2011) over nominees including Glacéau Vitamin Water. MarketingSherpa published a case study on the brand’s organic social growth.

The origin

The founding idea traces to 1980: co-founder David Cayton bought an engagement ring for Brenda and, with nothing to put it in, hid it in a candle — because she loved them. Three decades later, David, Brenda, and Justin turned that story into a company. Justin served as co-founder and CEO from January 2011 to February 2016. The brand continues to operate at diamondcandles.com.
